Introducing Lemongrass Essential Oil

I've been very remiss in not having lemongrass essential oil as one of our staples. Whilst I have been using it in many of the muscle relief blends I make for clients, it has been one of those oils on my never ending list to make a label for. So up until now it hasn't been available as a retail purchase. Well as you can see - it finally got done and so to do it justice I wanted to honour this amazing oil!

Lemongrass essential oil (Cymbopogon citratus) is extracted via steam distillation, using the leaves of the plant. Its fragrance is fresh, lemony, sweet and earthy. It's colour varies from pale to vivid yellow and it's believed to have numerous therapeutic properties including analgesic, antibacterial, anti depressant, antifungal, antimicrobial, antiperspirant, antiseptic, antiviral, astringent, carminative, deodorizer, diuretic, febrifugal, galactagogic, insecticidal, nervine, sedative for the nervous system and general tonic (Lembo, 2017).

On a physical level, lemongrass essential oil is traditionally used for muscle aches and pains, sprains, injuries and bruises (hence why I use it regularly in massage) but it is also used in skin care as it is believed to tighten the epidermis, treat acne and make a great deodoriser and anti-perspirant. Something to note with lemongrass is that it is a very strong oil and can cause skin sensitization. So don't use it in levels greater than a 1% dilution on the body and much lower on the face. What does that mean in real terms? Aromatherapists generally operate on a 2.5-3% dilution of essential oil in a carrier oil or cream such as almond oil. So in 25mls of carrier we use about 12-15 drops of essential oil. With lemongrass you would need a maximum of 3 drops per 25ml for the body and 1 drop per 25mls for the face. That is how potent Lemongrass is!

Lemongrass smells and feels energizing. Not only is it used to fight insects and nasty germs, it is traditionally used to uplift the spirit and clear the mind and space. See below for a summary on the traditional uses of lemongrass essential oil according to Lembo (2019).
